Areola restoration is a specialized tattoo technique that recreates the appearance of the nipple-areola complex using pigment alone — color, shape, shadow, and highlight layered to read as dimensional on a flat or reconstructed chest.

It's performed after mastectomy, after breast reconstruction, and after gender-affirming top surgery. Some clients come for a full pair, some for a single side to match an existing areola, and some to soften scarring around a graft.

It is not medical treatment, and it isn't cosmetic in the usual sense. It is the last visual step of a long process, and most people describe it as the moment their chest starts to look like theirs again.

Skin needs to be fully healed and settled before pigment goes in. As a general guide, that means at least 6 to 12 months after your final surgery, and at minimum 3 months after any revision.

If you had radiation, tissue needs additional time and assessment — irradiated skin takes pigment differently and can be more fragile. Bring your timeline to the consultation and, if you have one, clearance from your surgeon.

Most people need two appointments: the first session to place the base, and a second 6 to 8 weeks later to adjust tone and depth once the first has healed.

This is the hardest technical part of the work, and it is the reason clients travel for it.

Areola pigment isn't one color — it's a blend built from undertone, surrounding skin, scar tissue, and how each of those will shift as it heals. On deep skin tones, pigments that look correct on the surface can heal ashy, grey, or unnaturally pink because they were formulated and swatched on light skin.

Destiny mixes to your undertone, tests placement, and intentionally builds in healing shift rather than correcting for it afterward. Specializing in melanated skin is not a side note of this practice — it is the practice.

Consultations are private and unhurried. Restorative appointments are booked with the studio closed to other clients, and you are welcome to bring one support person.

No photographs are taken without your written consent, and consent for a photograph is never a condition of service. You may stop, pause, or reschedule at any point in the appointment without explaining why.

You can keep a gown or drape on for everything except the working area. If you'd prefer to see the studio before committing to anything, that visit costs nothing.

Every restorative booking includes your consultation and the follow-up adjustment session. Consultations are free and carry no obligation.

Surgeons, plastic surgery offices, oncology patient navigators, and gender-affirming care providers are welcome to refer patients directly or to request studio information for a resource packet.

Desína Ink Tattoos operates under a current North Carolina Health Department permit with autoclave sterilization, documented spore testing, single-use needles, and bloodborne pathogen certification. Documentation can be provided on request for your records.
